I blink, waiting for my eyes to adjust to the dark stillness of the room. The air is hot and close, sweat crawling in between my breasts and sticking to the underside of my armpits. There is a soft hiss, and I jump as clammy fingers brush my outstretched hand. A sweet and musty stench, like sugar left burning in a pot, chokes the air, and when I huff and breathe through my mouth, something grainy and soft dances on my tongue. I spit as the bitter taste of ash and soot fills my mouth, and I stumble a few steps. Everything in me is screaming, begging to be let out. And suddenly, I am young again, waiting for Mummy to fetch me from the village school, hoping she will find me in the pit the other children have thrown me in.

“We’re going to bury you alive,” they sing, high voices bandying the words about.

Then there is a quick spark, a match singing flame into being, and the bright orange of a kerosene lamp pulls Etera into the light again. He thrusts the lamp in my face, and I take it, steeling my shaking hands. Those childhood ghosts melt away like smoke running from flame.
